Iranian drones have become difficult to ignore. The Shahed name appears constantly in reports about modern conflicts, while Iran itself continues to talk about expanding its drone production.
That makes a seemingly simple question worth asking: how many drones does Iran actually have?
The honest answer is that nobody outside Iran appears to know for certain.
There is no reliable official number
Iran does not publish a complete, verifiable inventory showing exactly how many operational drones its armed forces currently possess.
That leaves researchers trying to build a picture from production estimates, launches, battlefield losses, satellite imagery and intelligence assessments.
The problem is that these numbers do not always fit neatly together.
In March 2026, Reuters reported an estimate from the Centre for Information Resilience that Iran had the industrial capacity to produce around 10,000 drones per month.
That is a huge number, but there is an important difference between production capacity and actual production.
Having factories capable of producing 10,000 drones does not mean 10,000 finished drones are added to Iran's arsenal every month.
Then, in July, Iran's acting defence minister Majid Ebn al-Reza said that the country's drone production capacity had tripled during the war. Again, no exact production figure was provided.
So we have claims of rapidly increasing capacity, but still no confirmed number telling us how many drones Iran currently has.
The arsenal has also been used heavily
Another problem is that Iran has not simply been producing drones and storing them.
Large numbers have been launched.
Reuters reported that more than 1,000 Iranian drones had already been launched during the opening period of the conflict in March.
A later CSIS assessment said that Iran had conducted 6,770 combined drone and missile launches by April 1.
That figure includes missiles as well as drones, so it cannot be used as a drone count by itself. But it shows how quickly Iran was using weapons from its existing inventory.
At the same time, production facilities, stored weapons and other parts of Iran's military infrastructure were being attacked.
This means Iran's drone inventory was moving in both directions at once: new drones were being produced while other drones were being launched or destroyed.
So where are all these drones?
This is where the numbers become particularly interesting.
A June 2026 CSIS report cited recent US government assessments suggesting that Iran retained around 40 percent of its prewar drone arsenal.
Another open-source assessment published in July referred to US intelligence indicating that roughly half of Iran's drone capability remained after the war.
Those numbers are not identical, and that is exactly the point.
Even intelligence-based estimates reported publicly cannot give us one universally accepted figure.
And knowing that Iran retained 40 or 50 percent still does not answer the original question unless we know how large the arsenal was before the war.
If the starting number is unknown, a percentage of that number cannot magically give us an accurate total.
Production makes the question even harder
There is another reason why any estimate can become outdated quickly.
Iran is still producing drones.
Iran's acting defence minister claimed in July that production continued during the fighting and that drone production capacity had increased threefold.
Whether Iran can maintain that level over a long period is another question. Drone manufacturing still depends on engines, electronics, raw materials and other components. CSIS has documented Iran's continued dependence on some imported materials and parts despite years of work to manufacture more components domestically.
That is why a headline saying that Iran can "produce 10,000 drones per month" should be treated carefully.
It describes estimated industrial capacity, not a verified monthly delivery report.
What drones does Iran have?
The exact quantity may be unclear, but the existence of a large and varied Iranian drone programme is not.
Iran operates several families of unmanned aircraft, ranging from reconnaissance and armed UAVs to one-way attack drones.
The Shahed-131 and Shahed-136 are among the best-known examples. Iranian drone technology has also spread far beyond Iran itself, most notably through Shahed-derived systems associated with Russia's war in Ukraine.

For this question, the number matters more than the individual models.
So how many does Iran actually have?
Probably thousands.
But giving a more precise figure would create a level of certainty that the publicly available evidence simply does not support.
We know Iran entered 2026 with a substantial drone arsenal. We know thousands of drones and missiles were subsequently launched. We know military infrastructure and stored capabilities suffered significant losses. And we know Iran continued producing drones throughout the conflict and now claims to have expanded its production capacity.
What we do not know is the exact starting inventory, the exact number produced since then, the exact number destroyed before launch, or the number currently considered operational.
So for now, the most accurate answer to "How many drones does Iran have?" is not a dramatic number.
It is that Iran appears to still possess a large drone arsenal measured in the thousands, but no credible public source can currently tell us exactly how many.
And when the numbers change as quickly as the drones themselves are being produced and used, perhaps that uncertainty is the most important part of the answer.
